El Hierro

Spanish authorities were forced to close down El Hierro island and evacuate its residents due to to a major eruption occurring in an underwater volcano nearby. El Hierro island, a member of the Canary islands chain is a bustling port and home to  about 600 hundred.  Scientists have detected airborne volcanic fragments called pyroclasts and have ordered all aircraft from flying over the southern tip of the island where the activity is the greatest. Also ships have been ordered to stay away as well. Volcanic activity in this particular area has been virtually non-stop for the last 6 months but has recently turned dangerous with earthquakes at 4.4 magnitude occurring on a regular basis.
