Discovered in June 2011 by Hawaii astronomers, Comet 2011 L4 will be making a close approach of 1.0 AU (astronomical units) to Earth on March 5th. Strong likelihood this may be visible to the naked eye.
Asteroid 2012 DA14 is set to make the record books for the closest approach to earth by an asteroid as big as this since they started keeping records in the 1990’s. The asteroid, the size of a football field, will pass just 17,200 miles above the Earth, closer than most satellites. NASA says there is no danger of a collision, nonetheless this exceptionally close approach has everyone’s attention and space observers will be keeping a close watch as it approaches our planet.
