9:47 AM (EST) – A 6.7 magnitude quake has struck Santiago Del Estero, Argentinia. The quake was centered approximately 500 miles NNW of Buenos Aires (28.422°S, 63.146°W). Depth is 368 miles so this is a very deep quake. Surface damage is unlikely.
UPDATED 6-9-2011: Eruptions and ash continue – 3 airlines have cancelled flights out of Argentina’s main airports (Aeroparque and Ezeiza International Airport) due to ash clouds from the volcano.
Chile has issued a red alert for the area around Puyehue, home of a decades long dormant volcano which forms part of the 4 volcano Puyehue-Cordon Caulle volcanic chain. Gas and ash began erupting from it within the last hour. Hundreds of people have been ordered to evacuate the region immediately. The BBC is reporting 3,500 people have asked asked to leave. The volcano is roughly 500 miles South of the capital of Santiago. Early reports are indicating a 10 mile high column of ash is towering above the volcano now.
The eruption follows a series of 5 separate 4.6+ magnitude earthquakes to hit the Neuquen, Argentina area earlier today and a 4.9 magnitude earthquake that hit Los Lagos, Chile at 2PM (EST) this afternoon.
UPDATE (8 PM EST): MSNBC is reporting a 6-mile high volcanic cloud and ash has formed in the sky over the volcano area.

The Royal Observatory of Belgium is reporting that a “C4.1 flare erupted today June 1st around 17UT from NOAA AR 1226 and was associated with a CME and a coronal dimming. STEREO COR2 images indicate that this CME is directed towards Earth. Because of its higher speed this CME will most likely catch up with the CME that erupted earlier today. Expect disturbed geomagnetic conditions on June 4th when the CME interacts with the Earth’s magnetic field.”
We predict that this may also generate earthquakes greater than 6.0 or extreme weather conditions between the 5th of June and the 8th of June. Current location of these are not known at this time.
UPDATE 6-4-2011: The Solar CME has arrived and we have a volcano eruption (Chile), several earthquake swarms in Argentina and as we stated in yesterday we predict bizarre weather patterns to commence tomorrow and last over the next few days. Look particularly for odd weather on the West Coast of the U.S.
