Sky watchers will have their eyes fixed on the heavens today at 9 pm (EST) as the Earth experiences a close encounter with recently discovered asteroid 2000 EM26 zipping by us traveling 27,000 MPH. The asteroid, which will not hit us is estimated to be 885 feet (270 meters) in diameter and will be at a distant of 8.8 lunar distances from Earth.

Asteroid 2012 DA14 is set to make the record books for the closest approach to earth by an asteroid as big as this since they started keeping records in the 1990’s. The asteroid, the size of a football field, will pass just 17,200 miles above the Earth, closer than most satellites.  NASA says there is no danger of a collision, nonetheless this exceptionally close approach has everyone’s attention and space observers will be keeping a close watch as it approaches our planet.

NASA has just released data from the orbiting WISE telescope that indicates there are a lot more asteroids out there that can hit us then they previously new about.  While letting us know there is no need to panic, NASA has indicated that they are paying much closer attention then they had before.  More asteroids tand larger ones than previously thought are in orbits that potentially could collide with Earth. Impacting with Earth could create a host of environmental hazards not to mention extensive damage and loss of life. A small asteroid of  40 meters in size impacting earth would be equivalent to the detonation of a 3 megaton nuclear bomb.

Another close encounter with an asteroid is about to happen again and this time it’s happening on April Fools Day but this is no joke. A passenger jet sized space rock discovered March 13th and referred to by astronomers as 2012 EG5 will come closer to Earth than the Moon is.
Don’t worry, NASA says it will not hit us though.
This makes the third asteroid to come close to Earth in less than 30 days. Two other asteroids passed close by us on March 26th (2012 FP35 within 96,000 miles and 2012 FS35 which passed within 36,000 miles of Earth).
We will see another close flyby on April 4th when 2012 FA57, discovered on March 28, will pass at a range just beyond the orbit of the moon.

NASA’s Impact Risk Report confirms that newly discovered asteroid 2012 DA14 will be the closest asteroid to ever pass by Earth since it has been measuring these objects.  Flying below even the orbit of the Google geo satellite, the asteroid is scheduled to arrive February 15th, 2013.  Current calculations indicate that it will miss our planet but not by much.  More to come…..

Asteroid 2005 YU55 will pass close to Earth on November 8th, 2011. This large asteroid (1,300 ft/ 400 meters) will pass Earth within 0.85 lunar distances. This is extremely close and very big. It will approach from the South.

More details to come as it gets closer.
