In an event that has only happened once, and that was 150 years ago, the massive surface ice sheet that covered Greenland melted 40% by July 8th and then in a period of just 4 days had grown to 97%.  Scientists are baffled and have raised worldwide alarms at the incredibly rapid occurence. While the thicker ice remains, NASA calls the melt “unprecedented”.  The only time this was known to have happened was 1889.  Scientists have yet to determine whether this is a natural or the result of global warming.
